Creating a Butterfly Garden

The monarch butterfly population is dwindling - but there are ways to help! Even if you only have a small outdoor space, planting milkweed and nectar plants can provide monarch caterpillars and butterflies with the nutrients they need to survive. And this is a great activity to do with kids. When they see that first caterpillar or butterfly in or around the garden, the excitement they experience is truly special. What a fun way to make a difference!

  • Choose a spot that gets mostly sun

  • Plant several milkweed plants (more than one species, if possible) that are native to your area

  • Plant flowers that provide nectar to pollinators

  • Watch for monarchs and other butterflies and bees as they discover your garden!
